Better Times – The Story of the Poplar Rates Rebellion

“Better Times” written by Barrie Keeffe is the first full-length play directed by Ad Lib Productions, a new “pop up” theatre group based in Bolton and Manchester.

It tells the story of the Poplar Rates Rebellion, a tax protest that took place in Poplar, London in 1921. It was led by the former Labour Mayor of Poplar, George Lansbury, with the support of the Poplar Borough Council, most of whom were industrial workers.

The protest defied government, the courts, and the Labour Party leadership. George Lansbury himself would later go on to be the leader of the Labour Party.

If you enjoy watching political theatre then this performance will surely be a must-see event!
